As Director of the United States Immunization Program at the CDC, childhood immunization rates rose to record levels while local transmission of measles and rubella was eliminated. Prior to his 16-year tenure as director, Orenstein was part of the Epidemic Intelligence Service where he focused on smallpox eradication and measles elimination.
