Eldering: 1900 – 1988 (87 years old)
Kendrick: 1890 – 1980 (90 years old)
Year of great discovery/work
Beginning in the early 1930s, Eldering and Kendrick researched pertussis and administered a successful clinical trial that resulted in the first vaccine against the disease, which was in routine use by 1943. Following the development of the pertussis vaccine, the pair also combined three vaccines (diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus) into a single vaccine (DPT).
Eldering and Kendrick both had whooping cough before the age of five. They used it as motivation in their work.
