Austrian’s clinical career was devoted to conquering pneumococcal pneumonia. He worked tirelessly from 1962 to 1991 studying pneumococcal bacteria and ultimately developing an effective pneumococcal vaccine. Although more than 90 strains of pneumococci have been identified, Dr. Austrian determined which pneumococcal types most frequently caused disease. He used this information to develop a vaccine to protect against the disease.
