Nearly every child in the world was infected with rotavirus at least once by the age of five before a rotavirus vaccine was available. Indeed rotavirus was the most common cause of severe diarrhea in infants and young children worldwide. The Rotateq® vaccine was made by inserting genes from human rotaviruses into a cow strain of rotavirus in the lab, so that when the live viruses are given as a vaccine, they do not cause rotavirus disease, but the recipient still develops immunity to the parts of human rotaviruses that typically cause illness.
