Beginning in the early 1930s, Eldering and Kendrick researched pertussis and administered a successful clinical trial that resulted in the first vaccine against the disease, which was in routine use by 1943. Following the development of the pertussis vaccine, the pair also combined three vaccines (diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus) into a single vaccine (DPT).
