Through various positions, including president of the Sabin Vaccine Institute, he has led a team of international scientists in the development of vaccines against neglected tropical diseases. Some of the diseases he has studied include human hookworm, schistosomiasis, Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, ascariasis, trichuriasis and SARS.
